It is normal for your body to produce ear wax or cerumen. It is produced in the outer part of the ear canal and has a protective function. The ear wax has both lubricating and antibacterial properties. It is made up of dead skin cells that is combined with the discharge from two different glands. Most of the time, the old ear wax is moved through the ear canal by jaw motions and when it reaches the outside of the ear, it flakes off.
Ear wax removal is generally only necessary if there is impacted wax in the ear canal. The Symptoms of ear wax Build-up include:
Ear wax build-up is more likely to occur in:
Older adults may have difficulty with ear wax buildup if they wear hearing aids. Ear wax should be removed to prevent whistling from the hearing aids and to stop wax from blocking the sound bore of the hearing aids.
Ear wax can be removed in several ways. At The Hearing Specialist, we safely remove earwax from your ear canal, using a small curved instrument called a curet and Microsuction. Microsuction ear wax removal is performed using a microscope, and a low-pressure suction device to suck ear wax out of the ear.
Microsuction is accepted across the medical profession as the safest and most advanced and comfortable method of ear wax removal. The fact that no water is flushed into the ear canal as happens with ear syringing, this significantly reduces any risk of infection.
Blocked ears, hearing a ringing sound, having some problems hearing conversation? The problem may be simply ear wax. No referral from a doctor is required for wax removal.
